John Henry Haun was born in Weston, Platte, Missouri on September 4, 1849 to Zimiriah "Zimry" Haun and Elizabeth Whistman. His maternal grandfather was John Wilson Whistman, who started the first stage coach line in California. His family moved to California soon after he was born, they may have even waited for his birth to get on the road.

They settled in Gilroy, Santa Clara County sometime prior to 1875 when John married Lydia Jane Fisher on March 28th. Together they had nine children, all born in Gilroy except their second child Martha who was born in Washington, Alameda County. John and Lydia spent the rest of their lives in Gilroy, at a house that John built in Church Street downtown. He died there on July 19, 1930 and Lydia followed him on December 8, 1946.
