Narrative

John W. H. Smith was born August 16, 1831 in Brown County, Ohio to Benton Smith and Fanny Manahan. He married October 10, 1851 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Cincinnatti to Rosanna Holt. In the last years of his life he suffered several hardships. In 1878 his handle store burned to the ground with a loss of $30,000 and only insured for $3,000. He and his wife separated in 1880, she alleging that he was not supporting her, and he died in January of 1881. She filed a lawsuit against Manhattan Life Insurance Company for $3,000 in life insurance against her husband, the last payment of which he had not paid. Rosanna died in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1899 and was buried with her husband at Spring Grover Cemetery in Cincinnati in 1899.
