Joseph Grover Moody was born in about 1777. He married Judith Creason in Madison County, Kentucky on May 7, 1798. In 1812 he joined the Missouri Militia. On Dec 22, 1817 his name was included on a petition to the House of Representatives from inhabitants of St. Charles County, Missouri to propose that an academy of learning by established in Marthasville. He drowned in April of 1821 on the Missouri River.

An article in the St. Charles Missourian dated April 11, 1821 reads as follows:

WAS DROWNED: And lost near David Lemasters on the Missouri river, Mr. Joseph Moody, aged 44 years, sandy complexion, and had on the following clothing, blue jeans coat and waistcoat and black linsey pantaloons, had in his pockets a large red morocco pocket book, containing valuable papers, a silver watch, and a pint bottle with some spirits in it. Any person finding said Moody and will bury him and return the watch and pocket book with its contents to his widow in the county of Montgomery, near Pinckney, or at some other place where she can get them, shall be handsomely rewarded -
