Mary Jane Long Carlin (1830-Aft 1880)

Very little is known of Mary Jane at this time. The first record of her is her marriage to James J. Carlin in Ashley County, Arkansas on September 27, 1849. The second is the 1850 US Federal Census, in which she is living with her young husband in Mill Creek, Ashley, Arkansas. Knowing that she was married in Ashley County in 1849, it is likely that her parents were still living in the same county in 1850. Searching the 1850 Federal census we find only one family in Ashley County fitting the description. John H. Long, a carpenter from Tennessee age 48, and his wife Seletha, age 37 from Georiga, are living in the town of White, Ashley County. Their three eldest children that are living with them are Rebecca - 17, Henry - 16 and Mariah (a boy) - 13, all born in Alabama. Mary Jane, also born in Alabama, was just 20, only a few years older and well within proximity to have been John and Latitia's first child.

James and Mary Jane had at least three children, possible four. They are:

1. William A. Carlin (1850-Aft. 1870)
2. Frances Elizabeth Carlin (1852-1944) m. Mr. Callicott and William Churchman
3. Mary J. Carlin (Abt 1857-1885) m. Gilbert Smith Hastings
4. Nora Carlin (born 1876)
